42watt: “We Want to Make Climate Neutrality the Standard in Existing Properties”

42watt helps property owners renovate for energy efficiency with an online platform. The name of the startup, founded in 2021, is derived from its goal of reducing energy consumption per square meter to less than 42kWh. Jörg Überla, one of the three founders, presents his company in our interview.

Munich Startup: What does your startup do? What problem are you solving?

Jörg Überla: Due to the energy crisis and rapidly increasing energy costs, many real estate owners are thinking about energy renovation. We’ve developed a platform that supports owners on their path to climate neutrality – from research and possible renovation measures to actual implementation with experts. Our mission: We want to make climate neutrality the standard in existing properties.

42watt: “Structuring rapid growth well”

Munich Startup: But that’s nothing out of the box!

Jörg Überla: There is a nationwide list of energy efficiency experts who are independent and advise owners on the process. However, most of them don’t have any capacity available, which means you can end up waiting for several months. Our customers, on the other hand, receive advice from us (for example, an individual renovation roadmap) within ten days after we receive the necessary documents.

Munich Startup: What’s your founding story?

Jörg Überla: Our founder Marcus Dietmann approached me as a potential business angel. I found the topic so interesting that I also wanted to help operationally. After a trial month, we quickly made the decision to promote the topic together. It’s also because given the energy crisis and global warming, we don’t have much time – and existing properties make an important contribution to achieving climate targets.

Munich Startup: What have been your biggest challenges so far?

Jörg Überla: Our biggest challenge is structuring our rapid growth well. Many things can go wrong in this phase that you have to pay for dearly later. Because this isn’t our first startup, we hope we can avoid some of them.

“There are good reasons why Munich performs very well in city rankings”

Munich Startup: How is business going?

Jörg Überla: Unfortunately, we can’t give any specific figures here. But because the topic is interesting for all property owners and we offer an attractive solution, we’re growing very fast.

Munich Startup: How have you experienced Munich as a startup location so far?

Jörg Überla: It’s been very positive. There are good reasons why Munich performs very well in city rankings in general. The ecosystem of investors and startups has become strong, which makes it very attractive for us as well.

Munich Startup: Quick exit or staying power?

Jörg Überla: Staying power. The topic of real estate energy renovation is something society will have to deal with for decades to come and we want to become the leading company with 42watt. Our vision: To empower every property owner in becoming carbon neutral.
