OnPage.org – Superheroes of the Startup scene

The OnPage.org team is all about innovative tools to improve websites. There is no doubt that it ranks among the superheroes of the Munich Startup scene. Yet while the likes of batman will do everything to stay anonymous, everyone in the Bavarian capital knows exactly who they will find behind the heroic blue-and-white cape of Captain OnPage:

Marcus Tandler, Niels Dörje, Andreas Bruckschlögl and Jan Hendrik Merlin Jacob launched OnPage.org in August 2012. “We resisted the temptation for the longest time,” admits Bruckschlögl, who wanted to keep the analysis tool to optimize websites that he and his colleagues had developed for their own use. “We asked ourselves why we should give others the same advantage that had given us a certain edge in the industry. But there came a point when people more or less forced us to take the plunge.”

Fortune, it seems, has to be forced on some people. Although the tool was completely unknown on the market when a test version was published, the 100 beta accounts – priced at EUR 89 apiece – went like hot cakes and were sold out within 24 hours. In August 2012, OnPage.org went live with less than EUR 2,000 Startup capital. Paying its way solely out of its own pocket(s), the new company was in the black from the word go and boasted its 500th customer after just five months in business. The number has since risen to 3,000 and counting. Awards such as “Startup of the Year 2013” and “Startup Champion 2013” followed, before the company took its place among the top 100 innovators in Germany as early as June 2014.

Entrepreneurial spirit for cave dwellers

So there they sit, the founders of OnPage.org, chilling out on a couch in “the cave”, the cozy and slightly earthy meeting room in the vaulted basement of their company premises in the heart of Munich. The place smells old, but pleasantly old. One might just as well be about to taste a fine wine or two in a dimly lit cellar hewn into the rock on some noble estate. “The cave” has a special flair to it. It is a place to shut out the world and talk in peace and quiet. You immediately feel at ease, and it is easy to feel comfortable on the sofa. What better place to welcome guests?

Captain OnPage

One floor up, things look decidedly more modern. Some 40 outgoing young employees are each perched in front of their computers, their fingers flitting over the keyboards. A life-size Captain OnPage, the company’s figurehead, stands guard. The casual, laid-back atmosphere almost (but not quite) manages to obscure the fact that the people here work hard and long. A couple of crates of beer are stacked in a corner, and a barbecue forms the centerpiece of the secluded inner courtyard. The young entrepreneurial spirit could not be more tangible. But what is it that makes OnPage.org’s idea so special?
