Since January 2022, day-old chicks may no longer be culled due to their gender in Germany. In other words: The shredding of male chicks, which have no use in the egg industry, is no longer allowed. To keep them from hatching in the first place, the Munich startup Orbem is linking imaging technology, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with artificial intelligence. With the company’s ‘Orbem Genus,’ chicken eggs can be classified before the chicks ever hatch.
