Hunter & Co. Builds an App for All Hunters

Digitization deep in the forest? — That’s no longer a vague promise, but will instead become a reality thanks to the app from Hunter & Co.  The app aims to help hunters plan their hunting trips. Learn more about how it does that in detail in our Seven Questions.

1. Who are you and what do you do?

Markus Ortmann, Hunter & Co
Markus Ortmann.

We’re the Munich startup Hunter & Co. and have built the Jagdgefährte (hunting companion) app. Our app is a digital companion for hunters. Our app provides planning support even before a hunting trip begins. It is by your side out in the hunting grounds while scouting and shooting, takes care of personal and joint organization of the hunting grounds after the trip and makes it possible to communicate with fellow hunters!

I’m Markus Ortmann, 37, and studied Information Systems here at the Technical University of Munich. Lorenz Frey-Hilti is my co-founder. Lorenz is from Zurich, 28, studied Business Economics and is the experienced hunter in the team.

Lorenz and I met through a mutual friend, and hunting instantly became a shared topic of interest. A lot more connects us now, but that’s a whole different story.

2. But that’s already been done!

That’s true, but not like this! We’re most definitely not the first hunting app on the market. We are, however, the first hunting app that supports hunters through the entire process and still is extremely easy and lean. We didn’t want to overload the app with functions, but instead want to support the actual steps that hunters take with clever services. As is the case when developing any app, we had to and still are figuring out the basics to give us a foundation for continuing to develop the app along with feedback from our users to achieve our vision.

Hunting terminology = a genuine challenge

3. What was your biggest challenge so far?

The biggest challenge (at least for part of the team) was learning hunting terminology.

4. Now let’s get down to the nitty-gritty:  How is business going?

It’s going! Just kidding. We’ve actually reached our set targets much faster than expected, and the commitment and loyalty from our users continues to amaze us. And to name a figure: We’ve been on the market for twenty weeks and now have just about 30,000 installs.

5. What does Munich mean to you?

Our home of choice, true love and the Isar River.

6. How will your startup become the next unicorn? Or will we be seeing you at an Epic Fail Night soon?

Even though we are always willing to take one for the team for a good story, we hope to pass on the Epic Fail Night.

7. Last but not least: Hiking or beer garden?

Have a barbecue!
